Stay Responsive to the Holy Spirit

It is possible to pray for God to lead and still struggle when His direction challenges our expectations. In Acts 7, Stephen walked through Israel's history and exposed a sobering pattern: God was at work, yet His people often resisted the help He sent. His message invites us to examine our own responsiveness.

God can work beyond what we recognize

Stephen recalled Joseph's rejection and suffering, then emphasized God's presence with him. Joseph could not see the whole story from the place of betrayal. Later, the one his brothers rejected became an instrument of provision for their family. Our limited view calls for humility. We can bring honest questions to God while remaining open to the possibility that He is working beyond what we currently understand.

Examine the expectations you carry

Tradition, familiarity, and comfort can become deeply rooted. A familiar practice may be valuable, yet our attachment to it can make change difficult. The searching question is personal: am I willing to obey Jesus when obedience disturbs my preferences? We do not have to manufacture a dramatic experience. We can begin with the clear instruction already before us in Scripture.

Practice a listening posture

Responsiveness grows through prayer, careful attention to God's Word, and a willingness to receive wise correction. Test what you hear rather than following pressure or personality. Ask whether a proposed direction agrees with Scripture and reflects the character of Christ. Humility allows us to remain teachable while exercising discernment.

Your next step

Read Acts 7:9–10 and 7:51. Name one expectation you have been holding tightly. Ask God to show you a faithful next step, then discuss it with a mature believer who can help you listen carefully.

Prayer

Holy Spirit, make my heart teachable. Help me recognize where comfort or pride has made me resistant. Lead me in the truth of Scripture and give me courage to obey Jesus. Amen.
