The way we understand ourselves shapes the way we respond to temptation, failure, and change. Romans 6 directs believers toward the death and resurrection of Jesus as the foundation of a new life. Our history matters, but it no longer has the final word over the person we are becoming in Christ.
Know what Christ has done
Paul points to our union with Jesus in His death and resurrection. The old life under sin's rule has been confronted through the cross. Second Corinthians 5:17 describes the person in Christ as a new creation. We begin with the work of Jesus and learn to view our lives through that truth.
Consider yourself alive to God
Romans 6:11 calls believers to consider themselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ. This gives us a truthful response when an old pattern insists that nothing can change. We can acknowledge the struggle while remembering that we belong to Jesus. Confidence grows as we return to what He has done and depend on His grace.
Offer your life to Him today
Paul moves from what we know to how we live. Romans 6:12–13 calls us to offer ourselves to God. That offering takes practical form through the words we speak, the choices we make, and the habits we cultivate. Galatians 5:16 calls us to walk by the Spirit. Dependence on Him supports active obedience in the situations we actually face.
Your next step
Read Romans 6:1–14. Write down one truth about your life in Christ. Then identify one choice today through which you can offer your thoughts, words, or actions to God. Seek support from a mature believer where an old pattern needs sustained attention.
Prayer
Father, help me understand the new life You have given me through Jesus. Renew the way I see myself, strengthen my faith, and teach me to walk by Your Spirit in today's decisions. Amen.
